Au Sable River Race

The 77th Au Sable River Canoe Marathon in Michigan began at 9pm on Saturday July 26th, 2025 and completed just under 20 hours later.

It was a record year in terms of competitors for the 120-mile race that runs from Grayling to Oscoda. There were 230 racers, more than ever before, with paddlers from 21 states and four countries. The intense overnight race is a marvel of athleticism and attracts spectators from around the world to view the endurance race.

Chris Kucharek, a native of Grayling, grew up watching his uncle race and competed in his 9th Au Sable canoe marathon in 2025. This year was his son, Ethan’s, turn. The 19-year-old competed in his first-ever marathon with his dad acting as coach.

Chris’s wife and Ethan’s mother, Marlana is a key part of their support system and has an essential role to play in helping the team complete the race.

“Its a full circle event for us, because Chris and I raced together when we were dating, to see one of our kids finish the race with Chris, I’m just super proud.”

Marlana, Ethan’s sister Emma, Ethan’s girlfriend Jillian Hartman, and cousin Iziah are part of the Kucharek “feeder” crew team. The “feeders” crew will meet the competitors along the route to provide food and hydration over the course of the 120-mile route.

The pair fell short of their goal to finish in the top 40. They placed 44th, completing the race in 16 hours, 22 minutes and 52 seconds.
